How to Crack CAT in 5 Months- A proven Strategy to score 99%ile

Why 5 Months Is Enough for CAT Prep?

The CAT exam tests for logic and reasoning and application, so not requires memorizing the questions and answers.
I would say you can actually learn the necessary concepts, do mocks and work on your test-taking strategies in 150 days with an adequate study plan.
The good news is you are not starting from zero, you already have some baseline level reading, logical reasoning ability, and quant ability from your educational context.

Month-Wise CAT Preparation Plan

Here is the month-wise strategy to score 99%ile in CAT 2025

Month 1 (July): Concept Building (Foundation Phase) for Beginners

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Get started with Arithmetic (Percentage, Ratio, Averages). Clear concepts from NCERT grade 9 or 10 or CAT prep platforms like iQuanta, TIME or Arun Sharma books.
  • VARC: Start reading daily – editorials (The Hindu, Aeon, NYT). Focus on understanding the tone, intent, and summaries.
  • DILR: Work on some basic sets from previous year's CAT papers. Focus on arrangement and the puzzles.

Target: minimum 3 hours a day – ONE subject every day, plus 1 RC or DI set every day.

Month 2 (August): Focus on Core Topics

  • Quant: Spend time on Algebra, Number System and Modern Math.
  • DILR: Caselets, Bar graphs, Venn Diagrams. time/speed and understanding were areas of focus.
  • VARC: 3 RC's/day, reading, and beginning to tackle para-jumbles.

Use topic-wise CAT questions from previous years to get a sense of CAT's logic-heavy style.

Month 3 (September): Mock Test phase begins.

  • Begin taking 1 full-length mock every week.
  • Post-mock de-brief is essential. Write flaws, weak topics, and time splits.
  • You should place more emphasis on accuracy over attempts.

Strategy Change: Revise weak areas and redo those topics based on your mock scores.

Month 4 (October): Mixed Practice + Strength Building

  • Now that you have covered the concepts, begin sectional tests.
  • Now you practise questions from the moderate to tough level.
  • Attempt mixed-topic DILR and RC sets to represent actual CAT cases.

Use Excel or Google Sheets to document and graph performance metrics/score/timing across topics.

Month 5 (November): Mock Marathon + Revision+Exam

  • Take 2 or 3 mocks per week in a full exam simulation.
  • More focus on test-taking strategy: Know when to skip, know when to guess, and manage your time.
  • Review basic shortcuts, review formulas, and repeat frequent errors.

Join live mock discussions, diary groups on the CAT telegram, and/or crash revision programmes.

Exam day tips to Score 99%ile in CAT 2025

  • Don't overemphasise Quant – give equal importance to all 3 sections. Many toppers have a 99th percentile with sectional scores that are equal.
  • Join a peer group or coaching (like iQuanta) – daily practice, peer doubt solving, and a mentor speed up the learning process.
  • Build endurance – set up your mocks to closely simulate real CAT conditions.
  • Analyse like a topper - Don't just give mocks; analyse them.
