This Train Question Was Asked in an IIM Ahmedabad Interview — Can You Solve It?

The IIM Interview Question

A train 100 meters long takes 30 seconds to cross a man walking at 6 kilometers per hour in the direction opposite to that of the train.

Find the speed of the train.

Check you can crack it or not?

Here is the Step by Step Solution

Step 1: Convert the man's speed into meters per second.
The man is walking at 6 km/hr, which needs to be converted to m/s:

6× 3600 /1000= 1.67 m/s (approx.)

Step 2: Use relative speed, since they are moving in opposite directions.
So, the relative speed = speed of train + speed of man
Let the train’s speed be x m/s.
Relative speed=𝑥+1.67

Step 3: Use the formula:
Time=Distance/Speed

We’re given:
Distance = 100 meters (length of the train)
Time = 30 seconds
So,
30= 100/x+1.67

Multiply both sides:
𝑥+ 1.67=100/30=3.33

𝑥=3.33−1.67=1.66 m/s
Now convert the speed of the train back to km/hr:
1.66×3600/1000=6 km/hr

✅ Final Answer:

The speed of the train is 6 km/hr.
